Creative Night: Make a Mini Mobile
Alexander Calder pioneered the modern mobile in the early 1930s after being inspired by a visit to Piet Mondrian's studio. His abstract wire sculptures became what Marcel Duchamp called “mobiles” - sculptures that move through space and respond to the air around them. Calder described his wire work as “drawings in space,” bringing balance, movement, and time into sculpture.
This month, we'll take a look at Calder's work and how mobiles are built, including shaping wire arms, finding balance points, and assembling from the bottom up. Then we'll make small mobiles of our own using paper and wire.
Basic materials will be provided. Bring any small objects, scraps from your own medium, or found items you'd like to incorporate.
